   Review for Ch 9 Test

Do you know why  the Kreb's Cycle occurs twice?
Because there are 2 pyruvates to be processed from glycolysis, therefore 2 acetyl groups for Kreb's. There are 2 b/c at step 4*, two 3-carbon molecules were produced by the splitting of a product of glucose, each one an isomer of the other. One continues on through steps 5 - 9 producing the first pyruvate. Moments later, using the enzyme isomerase, the cell converts the other 3-carbon molecule into its isomeric form, sending that through steps 5 - 9, producing a second pyruvate. Therefore, to correctly express the results of the complete breakdown of 1 molecule of glucose, we have to consider Kreb's twice and follow all its products to completion!!
*oohhh...and of course you know the value of step 3 in the regulation of glycolysis (phosphofructokinase as an allosteric enzyme responding to AMP and ADP to go faster [pos. feedback]....while responding to ATP to slow down [neg. feedback])!!
