The Reshaping of Everyday Life, 1790 - 1840
by Jack Larkin

This is a rather thorough piece of social history that purports to look at the changes in American society that took place between 1790 and 1840. On reading it you are likely to find that it is heavily slanted to covering New England during that time period although an attempt is made to discuss all of the United States. You are to read this book and write a paper (due date: November 6) of no less than 1200 words in which you address the following topics:

What, precisely, was the nature of the changes that took place during that time period?
Describe the distinguishing features of society during that time period.
What are the types of primary historical resources that Larkin uses to build his case?
What new revelations about American social life during this time period did you find?
How was society during this period like present day society and how was it different from today?

Be sure to double-space the body of the paper and turn it in with a cover page that includes your name, the title of your paper and the date it is being turned in.
