Political Cartoon Assignment

Purpose:

-          To think analytically and critically about political issues

-          To explore the creative process

-          To demonstrate knowledge of your civic rights, duties and responsibilities within the democratic process

-          To understand political cartoons and how art can be as persuasive as written editorials

Due: 21 Nov. at the start of class

Imagine that you work for a newspaper – local or national – as the editorial cartoonist.  All of the articles for the day are in, and, now, you need to create a political cartoon.  Choose a current issue and create a political cartoon that clearly articulates your feelings on the issue.

To consider while brainstorming:

-        What is your topic about?

-        What do you feel about the topic?

-        What can you draw to symbolize this topic?

-        What group/person is directly involved with your topic? How do you feel about this group/person?

-        How can you describe the involvement?

-        How can you draw this?

Details:

o        You must create all of your cartoon

o        Your cartoon should take up a complete blank piece of paper

o        You can use a computer to generate images, but you should be the creator of these images. (Ex. You should not be taking images from online and slotting them into your cartoon, but you can create the image with a graphic program or the drawing program.)

o        You should be prepared to present your cartoon
