Rutland Town

By: Alicia Perez and Lyndsay Donahue

The land was founed in 1761 when John Murray was granted permission to be the first land owner of Rutland Vermont. John Murray from Rutland Massachusetts never actually lived in Vermont but named the land he owned here after his home town. The first man to settle in Rutland Vermont was James Mead in the March of 1770 his family of thirteen and him traveled here from Manchester Vermont. In 1770 the town of Rutland consisted of the ares we know now as Mendon, Pittsford, Ira, and Clarendon. Later in 1886 the town of Rutland with its original boundaries was broken up into the areas we know today. The western residents became West Rutland, Northern residents became Proctor and parts of Pittsford, and the City of Rutland was established in 1892. These changes ouccred because the citizens wanted to seperate from eachother and form their own governments.
