Land area: 31.6 square miles.
The township of Clarendon was claimed under three diffrent parts. First: John Henry Lydius claimed a track of land 24 miles wide given to us by the Mohawk Indians , extending 60 miles south from the mouth of Otter Creek. Gov. Shirley of Massachusettes confirmed the deed in 1744. Present day Clarendon held one Lydius township called Durham, and two others called Fairfield and Cambridge Second: The township of Clarendon was granted by Governor Benning Wentwoth of New Hampshire September 5, 1761.This is usually known as the territorial boundary, the title was born after an extended period of dispute in early Clarendon history. Third: By the grant of Socialboro, the New York Governor Dunmore attempted to achieve title to the region on April 3, 1771. This grant only included the northern part of Clarendon. on January 7, 1772 Governor Tryon issued a New York patent of Durham; it included the rest of Clarendon. |
