The town of Fair Haven Vermont, is located in the western part of Rutland County. Its surroundings include Benson to the north, Poultney River to the south, West Haven to the west, and to the east is Castleton, and a slight piece of Poultney.

Fair Haven was chartered at Manchester the date of October 27th, 1779. Out of the original grantees: Colonel Matthew Lyon, Oliver Cleveland, Philip Priest, Israel Trowbridge, Derrick Carner, and Elizabeth Dudley all became settlers here.

Matthew Lyon was from Ireland and immigrated to Connecticut in 1765 before moving to Wallingford, Vermont in 1774. From 1174 to the founding of Fair Haven, Lyon was in the Army and became a member of the Vermont House of Representatives.

In 2000 there was listed to be a population of 2,928 people. There are 1,165 households, and 778 families. Fair Haven has 18.1 square miles, 17.6 of which are land, and .5 which is water.
