History

• Founded: November 2, 1761 by Benning Wentworth
• The original inhabitants came from Salisbury, Connecticut
• During the American Revolution a large part of the town of Middlebury was burned during the Carleton’s Raid in November of 1778.
• Middlebury College was founded in 1800.
• Middlebury was evacuated for a short period of time because of a train derailment on October 22, 2007.
