Raymond
E. Lopes

Hello,I'm
Ray Lopes. I was born in Springfield, MA, on September 23, 1956.
I received my education in the Springfield Public School System.
I earned my B. S. degree, Summa Cum Laude, in Chemistry with concentrations
in Biology and Education from Western New England College in Springfield,
MA, in 1978. I have known since first grade that I wanted to be a
teacher.
I
was a substitute teacher at Longmeadow High School in Longmeadow, MA, and
Ludlow High School in Ludlow, MA, for one year. I taught Biology
and Physical Science at Longmeadow High for the 1979-1980 school year.
Due to a reduction in staff, I left Longmeadow and while vacationing in
Vermont saw an ad for a science teacher at Rutland High School. I
began at Rutland in August of 1980 and have taught a variety of courses
over the past 21 years including: Biology & Lab, Animals & Plants,
Unified Science, Human Body, Practical Chemistry, Physics & Lab and
Basic Life Science.
I presently teach Chemistry
& Lab Honors and Chemistry
& Lab. I have taken numerous graduate courses primarily in
science, education and computers. Can you guess what my favorite
color is? My students learn very quickly that it is GREEN!
I met my wife, Kathleen Lopes,
a math teacher, here at Rutland High. Can you guess her favorite
color??? We have been happily
married since 1987.
We enjoy traveling,
spending
time at the ocean,
, whale-watching,
,
cooking,
animals, photography, music and gardening together.
For the 1997-1998 Year-End Studies Program, I team taught
a course called
Forensic
Lab Science
with my colleague,
Debbie Rodolfy!!!
The most important tool to a chemist is a periodic table. So in case
you need to reference one, here is a current one:

Periodic Table Of Elements
